Turkmen students rely on UN

In March there will be 8 months since the government of Turkmenistan imposed a travel ban on 165 students, who had been previously enrolled in the American University of Central Asia (AUCA). Those who tried all options but are still being barred from travelling have the last hope left – the forthcoming visit of the UN Secretary-General.

    On 10 March 2010 a meeting between the Chairperson of Turkmenistan’s Mejlis (Parliament) Akdzha Nurberdyeva and the head of "Eurasia-2" department under Israel’s Foreign Ministry Shemi Zur, overseeing connections with Southern Caucasus and Central Asia, was held in Ashgabat. Since July 2009 he has been serving as non-resident ambassador (permanently based in Jerusalem) in Armenia, Tajikistan and Turkmenistan.
    Drugs are running low

    Following the establishment of the State Service on Combating Drugs, the authorities of Turkmenistan, by G. Berdymukhamedov`s initiative, launched a relentless fight against drugs. The amount of drugs in the country has indeed decreased.

    Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdimuhammedov instructed the city administration to prepare a plan to bring order to the outskirts and suburbs of the capital, demolition of temporary buildings, construction of high-quality roads.

    Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has begun a two-day working visit to Turkmenistan to discuss with the country’s authorities prospects for stronger economic and trade relations.

    Although the constitution declares the country to be a secular democracy and presidential republic, it is an authoritarian state of approximately five million that was dominated by President-for-life Saparmyrat Niyazov until his death in December 2006. The now-disbanded People's Council selected six candidates for the February 2007 presidential election. All those selected were members of the Democratic Party, the country's only political party, and Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov won in an election that did not meet international standards. December 2008 parliamentary elections also fell short of international standards. Civilian authorities generally maintained effective control of security forces.
