 New Chancellor – new rates
21.08.2010 After President G. Berdymukhammedov appointed a new chancellor of the Turkmen State University – the largest higher educational establishment in the country in July, the amount of bribe which needs to be paid to be admitted to a university has risen sharply. |

 Evacuated forever
19.08.2010 Many Turkmen students, enrolled in higher educational establishments in Kyrgyzstan, will not be able to continue their education. Among them are those students who were evacuated to Turkmenistan from Kyrgyzstan’s city of Osh in June 2010. |

Students barred from entering Kyrgyzstan
13.08.2010 On 11 August the Turkmen Service of Radio Liberty reported that in the Lepap velayat students enrolled in Kyrgyzstan’s higher educational establishments have been summoned by the local authorities and asked to submit a signed confirmation that they will no longer continue their studies and travel to Kyrgyzstan. |

A year later “rufesunik students” are leaving Turkmenistan
28.07.2010 Former students of the American University of Central Asia (AUCA), funded by the Open Society Institute – the Soros Foundation, who became hostages in their home country last summer have been permitted to exit the country to go to St. Petersburg to continue their education at the Smolny Institute of Liberal Arts and Sciences under the St. Petersburg State University. |

26.05.2010 The scenario for the opening of educational establishments was widely practiced back under Niyazov’s presidency, and in the meantime this practice is being reinforced. The best schoolchildren and teachers from various municipal schools are selected. Throughout several weeks the red-carpet welcome for the President is rehearsed with each word and movement carefully learnt by heart, and then, during the grand opening of a school the benefits of the educational reform are demonstrated to the President, along with all the country’s residents, watching TV broadcasts. |
