Last week two people died following complications caused by swine flu (A/H1N1) at the Ashgabat municipal virulent diseases hospital. This is the data which was confirmed by our sources. There is no official confirmation but the residents of the Turkmen capital are frightened.
No awareness-raising campaign about the prevention of the infectious disease is underway. Moreover, media outlets are not involved in this initiative. It appears that the authorities are worried about spoiling the self-created image of a prosperous country which is not affected by economic crises and epidemic outbreaks.
Teachers at schools are urged to appease schoolchildren. The only thing that the educators are allowed to say to schoolchildren – “do not believe the gossip”. According to the rumours circulating in Ashgabat, over 100 people have died following swine flu complications.
At the same time, in some shops and hairdressers, staff members wear masks. Atlocalbazaarsvendors can be seen wearing flu masks. People are buying up all the anti-flu medications. Yet, accordingtooursources, respiratory masks are available only in one pharmacy (№4) in the capital.
